" Another Thomas HUGHES, from Pennsylvania, came to Kaskaskia in 1783, and made a claim on Big Nine Mile Creek. Claim 219 alos fenced up a spring on what has been known as the Hughes farm since 1795. Thomas HUGHES returned to Pennsylvania where he had married Martha ??? about 1771. His report of Illinois induced some others to accompany him and his family to Illinois. They secured a boat and when they reached Illinois along the Ohio River the Indians on the Illinois bank of the Ohio attachked them, killing some, including a nursing babe in his wife's arms, splashing its brains on her breasts, and killing him and some of his children. Those who were not killed landed in Kentucky. His wife, Martha, a daughter, Katherine, born in Pennsylvania, April 6, 1773, and James, born in Pennsylvania, September 6, 1777. were all that were left of the Hughes family. Thomas HUGHES lost his live trying to get to Randolph County to establish a home for himself and family."
